HE+ Merseyside visit Magdalene

Magdalene College welcomed 30 students from the HE+ Merseyside programme for an overnight visit.

HE+ is a collaborative programme between the University of Cambridge and its Colleges, working together with groups of state schools in 19 regions of the UK. The programme provides a year-long framework of support for Year 12 students who have the potential to progress to selective universities. Students receive ‘super-curricular’ support designed to help them explore their chosen subject in greater depth; advice and guidance sessions on the university application process; and an opportunity to visit the University of Cambridge to experience university life and meet current students from similar backgrounds.

Magdalene College has worked with the HE+ Merseyside Consortium since 2013. This year, we were pleased to welcome Year 12 students from 7 state-maintained schools in Merseyside for an overnight visit. The students received advice on writing their UCAS personal statements; a tour of Magdalene College and the Cambridge city centre led by our fantastic Student Ambassadors; an evening spent punting on the River Cam; and a chance to experience living in Magdalene student accommodation. Students also attended mock interview workshops led by Magdalene Fellows Dr Sergio Bacallado and Dr Simon Ravenscroft, during which the students worked through sample questions and gained an insight into the skills that applicants should aim to demonstrate in undergraduate admissions interviews.

On their second day in Cambridge, the students had the opportunity to explore Cambridge’s Colleges and departments as part of the University Open Day.

We look forward to continuing to work with HE+ Merseyside in the forthcoming academic year, and inviting more students to visit Magdalene in Summer 2024.
