Professor David Fergusson is a Fellow Commoner at Magdalene.
David Fergusson has been Regius Professor of Divinity since 2021. He was formerly Professor of Divinity in Edinburgh (2000-21), Professor of Systematic Theology in the University of Aberdeen (1990-2000) and Lecturer in Systematic Theology in the University of Edinburgh (1986-2000). He studied philosophy and theology in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Oxford, and began teaching on a part-time basis in Glasgow while serving as a parish minister in the west of Scotland.
During his time in Edinburgh, he served as Head of School of the Divinity, Principal of New College, and a Vice-Principal of the University. He continues to hold the position of Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland and Dean of the Order of the Thistle. He has delivered the Bampton Lectures in Oxford (2001), the Gifford Lectures in Glasgow (2008), the Warfied Lectures in Princeton (2009), the Birks Lectures in Montreal (2013), and the Mackay Lectures in Taipei (2017).
