Giving Day – thank you!
Thank you to all who donated to Magdalene Giving Day. Together, we raised over £155,000 for Student Welfare, Mental Health, Bursaries, Postgraduate Support, and College Activities.
New Library wins Royal Institute of British Architects East Award
The New Library has won a RIBA East Award. Judges praised the design, calling it "a deft and inspiring temple to learning." Dr Marcus Waithe, College Librarian, expressed delight in the recognition.
Professor Paul Dupree awarded Advanced Grant from the European Research Council
Magdalene’s Postgraduate Tutor, Professor Paul Dupree (1996), has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to study plant carbohydrates, aiming to replace fossil fuels and plastics with renewable alternatives.
Magdalene celebrates two ornithologists: Newton, a pioneer of bird conservation, and Lack, who revolutionised ornithology by studying bird behaviour and ecology in the wild.
Magdalene Master, Sir Christopher Greenwood, added to the Eminent Scholars Archive
Sir Christopher John Greenwood has been added to the Eminent Scholars Archive. The archive includes interviews covering his career, views on international law, and his work on armed conflict.
Digitised by DIAMM, the 14th-century Peterborough Antiphoner is a key English chant source. Likely from Peterborough Abbey, its path to Magdalene remains uncertain despite possible ties.
Dr Philippa Steele awarded two million European Research Council grant
Dr Philippa Steele, Magdalene Senior Research Fellow, has been awarded a 2 million Euro ERC grant for her VIEWS project, exploring the visual properties of ancient writing systems.
This year’s IWD blog highlights Elinor James, a bold printer-author who published over 90 pamphlets and championed Anglicanism, defying expectations and censorship in 17th-century London.
The New Library has won a 2022 Civic Trust Award, recognising outstanding architecture and design. Selected from 160 global entries, it was praised for its relationship with Magdalene College.
Magdalene holds a rare pair of 18th-century Senex globes, crafted with Jonathan Sisson. Restored and conserved, they now sit proudly in the Old Library as examples of historic scientific artistry.
It is with great sadness that the College has learned of the death of Honorary Fellow Simon Barrington-Ward, KCMG. Our condolences go to his family, friends, and colleagues.
Magdalene College triumphed in netball, badminton, mixed hockey, and football at Sports Day. Despite losses in tennis, squash, and rugby, the day ended with victories in darts, pool, and table football.
