Appointment of a Master
Sir Christopher Greenwood, former ICJ judge and Magdalene alumnus, became Master of Magdalene College on 1 October 2020, succeeding Dr Rowan Williams after seven successful years.
Professor Raven elected as a Fellow of the British Academy
Professor James Raven (1990), Senior Research Fellow, has shaped the study of book history through decades of research and by founding the Cambridge Project for the Book Trust at Magdalene.
Members will be saddened to hear that Mr Michael Keall (1989), former Junior Bursar (1989–1993) and first Alumni Secretary (1998–2012), passed away on 7 July 2019 at the Arthur Rank Hospice, Cambridge.

Land’s End to John o’Groats Astride a Charging Bullet
Fred Spaven (2006) built an electric motorbike from a 1961 Royal Enfield and rode it from Land’s End to John o’Groats, filming a documentary about sustainable transport along the way.
Hans Sloane lent rare books and scientific instruments to Samuel Pepys, visited him regularly, and later performed the autopsy after Pepys’s death in 1703.
Magdalene has received a Gold Cambridge Green Impact Award, recognising the College’s strong commitment to sustainability through energy, waste, and biodiversity initiatives.

Lieutenant J.H.B. Hollings, admitted to Magdalene in 1906, was killed in action at Messines in 1914. His grave was formally identified in 1992, nearly 80 years later.
